Vorkommen: Europa, Kulturpflanze, Milde Regionen
Aussehen: Bis 8 m hoher Strauch oder Baum mit knorrigem Stamm, kleinen handförmigen Blättern. Sie haben einen flaschenförmigen Blütenstand, in dem sich die Blüte befindet. Die Scheinfrüchte bestehen aus Steinfrucht und Fruchtstiel, sind kugel - birnenförmig und grün bis dunkelviolett. Milchsaft.
Gefährliche Zeit: Blütezeit (Frühjahr bis Herbst), Fruchtreife von Juni - September
Giftige Teile: Ganze Pflanze. Besonders Milchsaft und unreife Früchte
Wichtigste Wirkstoffe: Triterpene (Calotropenpylacetat, Methylmaslinat, Lupeolacetat), Cumarine (Furocumarine), Thiolprotease (Ficin), Harz, Kautschuk, Furocumarine, flavonoide Verbindungen, Proteine
Wirkungsweise, Vergiftungssymptome und Krankheitsfolgen: Haut- und Schleimhautirritation; zum Teil papainartig wirkende Enzyme. Vomitus, Diarrhoe. Bei grossen Mengen Krämpfe und Paralyse. Bei Zwergkaninchen Bericht über Tod nach Aufnahme von wenigen Blättern. Giftigkeit abhängig von Ficusart und Tierart.
Verwechslungsgefahr: Birkenfeige (Ficus benjamina), andere Ficusarten
